What does it take to tutor 3rd grade Math?

Third grade math as you might imagine is quite basic. An understanding of the concepts below is about all that’s needed. See the PARCC release material for examples of questions that might be asked on the test.

  • Addition and subtraction
  • Multiplication and Division
  • Rounding numbers
  • Simple word problems involving basic arithmetic
  • Measurements
  • Basic understanding of fractions
  • Given two fractions, knowing which fraction is bigger
  • Represent a fraction on a number line, a grid or sections of a pie
  • Tell time
  • Calculate time difference
  • Understand how the decimal system works
  • Understand order of magnitude (e.g. converting grams to kilograms)

So that’s pretty much all there is. Please sign up to be a tutor or tutor backup. It’s only one hour per week so let’s work together to raise our PARCC scores!

Mastery of these fundamentals are necessary for success in subsequent grades. By giving students a strong start, we increase their likelihood of success in the upper grades.

  1. My daughter, a third grader at Capitol Hill Montessori at Logan has been tutored by Robert for the last couple of months (he was a God sent), her level of confidence in her school work has improved dramatically. I noticed that her struggle in the classroom affected her disposition elsewhere. I wanted her to become more confident but what I was doing at home frustrated her more. Recently I’ve notice her wanting to participate more in academic challenges but it wasn’t until this weekend when I could finally say it’s working, after her tutoring session she said “I had fun today”, that’s the best compliment she could give you Robert! Thanks for everything and if your child needs a boost give this group a shot, you will not be disappointed.

  2. Thank you so much for your wonderful comment! I really wish we had started this earlier judging by the results. The part I like most is that she appears to be more motivated to work on her own between tutoring sessions.

Tutoring works and I hope that more parents can give just an hour to take their kids to a tutoring session. Schedules are flexible. Tutors are available evenings and on weekends.

If we all participated we could be hitting near 100% on the PARCC!
