A Parent Involvement Program

In 2016, a group of parents came together with the common objective of providing free tutoring to students at Capitol Hill Montessori.  It was a slow start but nonetheless we were able to engage a few children, set up tutoring software to manage people and schedules and conduct a few tutoring sessions.  I am pleasantly surprised at the willingness of parents to volunteer their time to help other children.  There are now more than twice as many tutors as there are students!

Our activities include:

  1. Setting up hands-on workshops for parents to better help their kids ready for the PARCC.
  2. More actively recruit 3rd graders into the program.
  3. Recruit more parent tutors
  4. Provide avenues for all stakeholders to help, recognizing their busy schedules and commitments

Tutoring complements the work done in class and further inspires children to work on their own. An objective is to have every 3rd grade child who needs help, be matched to a tutor. Will you join us?

If you are the parent of a 2nd grade child going into 3rd grade next year you are welcome to register in advance here!

  1. I really like the idea of a workshop, a hands-on workshop, that helps parents get their kids ready for PARCC. This could help more than an overview. A workshop will help parents understand what’s expected so they can act well ahead of time to help their children intimately understand the material.

  2. Thank you for your comment. Yes, I did a survey and a few responses came back where parents were interested in a hands-on workshop. I hope to build material over the summer for 3rd grade math and ELA. I will need input from other stakeholders (parents, teachers, admin) to contribute in the building of workshop material.
